Bracknagh’s Work Rate Blitzes Erin Rovers in Opening League Game
Erin Rovers 0-07 Senior Football Division 2 12th April 2019. Pullough
A new year and a new chapter begins for Bracknagh GAA. Barry Weldon and his management team of Declan Geoghegan and David Cassidy took control of their first competitive game of the 2019 season in a division 2 league game versus Erin Rovers on Friday 12th April 2019.
No sooner as referee Brian Gavin blew his whistle to indicate the start of the game, it was the Bracknagh lads who set their intent instantly. Mikey Cunningham won a turnover, the ball broke to Joe Costello and picked out Paul Kearney who obliged with the opening score of the game. Bracknagh contained Erin Rovers in their own half for much of the opening period. Excellent work rate from Bracknagh players forcing Erin Rovers into making a mistake. This blitzkrieg style of attack paid dividends with Mikey Cunningham and Eoghan Geoghegan adding points to the scoreboard.
Excellent passing from Peter Cunningham, Willie Dowling and Ciarán Donnelly began to set the tempo for Bracknagh, providing the catalyst for the other forwards to get in on the act. Hard work and determination from the players pushed Erin Rovers backwards. This pressure ultimately resulted in an unforced mistake by goal keeper, Neville Dunne who picked the ball off the ground outside the small square giving the match referee no option other than to give the penalty. Paul Kearney was a cool customer who slotted the penalty home to give Bracknagh 1-2 to 0-0 lead on a chilly evening in Pullough.
Bracknagh continued to dominate the kickouts in the opening quarter resulting in chances being created. Jamie Sheridan raised the green flag following neat passing from Joe Costello and Paul Kearney. The movement from all the
forwards created a lot of chances for Bracknagh. Jamie Sheridan grabbed his second goal of the half following a good drive forward by Jason Dempsey. Bracknagh continued to add points from Eoghan Geoghegan and Mikey Cunningham.
Erin Rovers first score came in the 15 minute following a pointed free from Ryan Delaney. Bracknagh responded with a goal from Joe Costello who found himself in acres of space following good work from Ciarán Donnelly and Peter Cunningham. Erin Rovers didn’t have the opportunity to play their game, due to the intensity the Bracknagh lads who were determined to keep pressing as the game progressed.
Erin Rovers found their wind just before the break, and points from Ian McLoughlin, Sean Russell and Barry Buckley to leave the score 4-06 to 0-06 at half time.
Erin Rovers started the second half in good manner getting an early score from Ryan Delaney. Bracknagh weathered the storm with normal service was resumed with great work rate from Ciarán Donnelly, Jamie Sheridan and Paul Kearney. Points from Costello and Kearney kept the scoreboard ticking over.
Erin Rovers were missing a few regulars who no doubt will make a difference later in the year. Both teams were positive in their approach to the game. Bracknagh, who were also missing a few regulars from their recent championship successes, will be happy with a positive start with an important two points gained for Bracknagh.
